Externships take teachers out of the classroom and into businesses or industries to gain hands-on experience and knowledge. The experience helps teachers gain real-world knowledge about the workforce their students are entering. And for business owners, externships provide an opportunity to communicate directly to educators the skills they seek in their employees.
In Greater Fort Dodge, two programs connect businesses and educators:
Iowa Central Externship Program
Externships for Teachers can be full-time, one-week temporary summer positions in local businesses for any type of professional in the educational system. Educators can earn a stipend of up to $1,000 for the week, as well as graduate credit through Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency.
