An effort to get Fort Dodge back into the Main Street Iowa program was endorsed Tuesday by a group that represents downtown property owners.
The Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District board approved a resolution of support for the Main Street program application being filed by the city staff and the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance.
Getting into the program would provide expert guidance on historic preservation, free architectural services and training for city staffers.
“I just think the time is right,” said Steve Pederson, the president of the district’s board. “The downtown is starting to show some retail growth. This will spur and support that.”
The city’s application for the program is due May 18. Local representatives will make a presentation to state officials in charge of Main Street Iowa in June. The state officials will announce their decision in August.
