What sparked your interest in your career path?
Growing up with a father who practices law, I have been familiar with the legal field since I was young, but I didn’t initially set out to become a lawyer. I knew that I wanted a career that would allow me to work with people from all different walks of life and to get to know people with different life experiences than mine, and I recognized that a legal career would give me this opportunity.
What’s the best part of your work?
I get the opportunity to work with people during some of their most significant moments, whether it be the excitement of closing on the purchase of a new home or financial and estate planning after welcoming a child to the family, or the stress and grief of settling an estate after a loved one has died. My hope is that I can take some of the stress out of these events and make the legal aspects the least of everyone’s concerns.
What motivates you to give back to your community?
Seeing so many other people working hard to make our great community even better. There are a lot of exciting things happening in Fort Dodge right now, and it is fun to be a part of the growth.
What community project that you were involved in are you most proud of and why?
Shortly after I moved back to town, I was invited to join the team which puts on the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Webster County. The event had always been successful, but with some new and enthusiastic leadership, we were able to make it one of the best in the state of Iowa. I played a very minor role in the growth, but to me, it was the perfect example of how a small group working hard can make a big difference, and how the Fort Dodge and Webster County community is willing to get behind a great cause.
What’s the best part of living in the Fort Dodge area?
Fort Dodge is the perfect mix of small town closeness and big city opportunity. I love that in a pinch, I always know who to call and people are glad to lend a hand, whether it be personally or professionally. On the other hand, there is always something going on, whether it be sports, live music, or other fi ne arts. Anyone who claims to be bored in Fort Dodge isn’t trying very hard!
Who are your heroes?
My parents have always been, and still are, my heroes. They are the two people that I look up to the most, and the two people from whom I have learned the most about how to be the kind of person I want to be. They set the bar very high, and I try every day to reach it.
What would you like to share about your family and/or hobbies?
My wife, Heather, works at Fort Dodge Middle School. I have two boys, Tommy, 3, and Colby, 2. My hobbies include running, officiating high school football and basketball games, tennis, and playing backyard baseball with my kids.
