ASSISTANT COUNTY ENGINEER JOB GOAL Applies professional knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices under general supervision; directs planning, designing, drafting, and inspection of county road projects; assists in long range planning. QUALIFICATIONS TRAINING/EXPERIENCE Job-related Bachelor's degree such as Civil or Construction Engineering. State of Iowa licensed professional engineer (PE), or Engineer in Training (EIT). Possession of a valid Iowa driver's license. Must maintain a current PE license with Continuing Education Credits. DEMONSTRATED SKILLS AND ABILITIES None WORK REQUIREMENTS Must be able to sit, stand, and walk. Must be able to walk on uneven or unstable ground such as construction site. Must be able to perform moderate lifting (50 pounds), if necessary. SAFETY TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: First Aid/CPR, Bloodborne Pathogens, Fire Extinguisher Use and Operation, Hazard Communication. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES PUBLIC RELATIONS Establishes a positive public relations image of the County through: • the effective handling of incoming telephone calls; • personal contact with other employees, citizens, and elected officials; and providing assistance of the highest quality to County citizens. PROFESSIONAL 1) Supervises planning, designing and drafting of culverts, grading, paving, bridge and other projects; assists in long range planning. 2) Supervises the construction, inspection, and administration of bridge and culvert, asphalt and concrete paving, road grading, and other related projects. 3) Supervises the testing of materials used in construction projects. 4) Assists the County Engineer in preparing reports associated with the operation of the department as required by local, state, or federal regulations. 5) Schedules, reviews, and evaluates the flow of departmental projects. 6) Contacts land owners in the purchase of right of way for construction projects. 7) Reviews traffic control activities; responds to inquiries from the public on various matters. 8) Supervises technical employees by assigning work, checking work and providing instruction on safety issues. 9) Acts for the County Engineer when that official is absent. GENERAL 1) Assists the County Engineer in coordinating and scheduling routine maintenance projects. 2) Responds and assists people who have complaints, questions, problems, and/or concerns with all aspects of County Engineering.
